Beyond Aggression: Listening to the Animal Behind the Behavior

Val Heart studied interspecies telepathic communication with me in the 1990s and went on to become an internationally known animal communicator, healer, teacher, and author. Through her Heart Wisdom Method®, she helps people listen deeply to animals and understand and support them at the deepest levels. You can discover more about Val and her work at www.learnhowtotalktoanimals.com.

Val’s story of Toby beautifully illustrates what can happen when we look beyond labels and outward behavior, become deeply present, and listen to an animal’s own experience. Being truly heard transformed Toby’s fear into trust and changed the course of his life. I am delighted to share his story. Now, from Val:

Some animals speak so softly that you only hear them when you listen with your whole heart.

Toby was one of those animals.

Toby had been labeled “aggressive.”
He was a rescue dog. Big, strong, deeply misunderstood, and no one could get near him at the shelter without fear.

Staff worried. Behaviorists tried.

And eventually… he was scheduled for euthanasia.

But the truth was hiding beneath the surface, waiting for someone to ask.

During a communication session, I quieted my mind, softened my energy, and reached out to him the way animals understand, through heart-centered presence, not words.

I expected anger… or a warning… or shutting down.

But what came through was a whisper:

“I don’t know how to trust.”

Not aggression.

Not dominance.

Not defiance.

Just heartbreak.

A simple truth, wrapped in fear.

He showed me images from his past.

Chaos, confusion, sudden movements, loud voices, and a deep sense of being alone in a world that never made sense to him.

No one had ever asked him what he felt.

No one had ever made space for his side of the story.

And when he finally felt heard, the tension in his body melted.

His energy shifted.

His eyes softened.

He had never been aggressive.

He had been afraid.

That day changed the course of his life.

With the right support, understanding, and communication, Toby was adopted by a gentle, loving family who saw him for who he truly was. A sensitive soul who needed someone to speak his language.

And he bloomed.

It’s animals like Toby who remind us why accurate communication matters.

Not the surface-level techniques, but the deeper skills, the emotional literacy, the intuitive clarity, the heart alignment that allow us to go beyond guessing and into real understanding.

Every time I work with an animal like Toby, I’m reminded:

“Animals don’t think in words, They think in feelings, concepts, energy, and images.”

And when we learn how to receive those messages clearly, we don’t just change their lives.

They change ours.

True communication creates a bridge where fear turns into trust, confusion turns into clarity, and animals finally get to tell the truth of their hearts.

Here are a few insights I hope touch your heart today:

  • Behavior is never the whole story. There is always an emotional truth underneath.

  • Animals want to be understood. Not trained into silence but heard into healing.

  • Listening at the soul level reveals the “why” behind behavior.

  • Many so-called “problems” disappear when an animal finally feels safe to express themselves.

  • Trust grows the moment they realize someone can hear them.

These are not beginner skills. They are next-level communication abilities that come from practice, presence, and a willingness to see animals as conscious, aware, emotionally rich beings.

Toby’s story isn’t about a miracle.

It’s about truth.

It’s about remembering that every animal carries a world inside them, a world we can learn to access with clarity, respect, and love.

When we communicate this way, the world becomes kinder, more compassionate, more loving, for them, and for us.
