DESERT DREAM
GARDEN OF CONTEMPLATION

RETREATS - Private and Shamanic

PRIVATE RETREATS

Treat yourself to a special retreat in a serene five-acre setting of the beautiful Sonoran Desert. Desert Dream Garden of Contemplation is a rich forest of native trees, cacti and other succulents including the iconic, majestic Saguaro cactus, flowering shrubs, wildflowers, and artifacts that facilitate your spiritual peace and renewal.

The tranquil, spacious beauty of the desert and artistry of the human/Nature collaboration encourages spiritual reflection, centering, and revitalization. Connection and communication with plant, animal, and mineral helpers and all the elements of the land invites a feeling of oneness with Spirit moving in us all.

There are paths to walk and places to sit and “be” in the garden and wild areas of the land. Desert Dream Chapel Tower has two shaded levels ideal for contemplative observation and views of the land. Benches and large rocks are placed in peaceful, shaded places. The garden is harmoniously arranged with the natural beauty of plants, rocks, branches, and artifacts to elicit tranquility and wonder.

There is a “playa” similar to a Japanese/zen dry landscape, with sandy gravel to rake and mold as you wish. You can add rocks, branches, and other collected materials grouped next to the playa to express your own contemplative yearnings, creativity, or realizations.

The word “playa” which means “beach” in Spanish and also contains the word “play.” Another definition of playa is “the flat-floored bottom of an undrained desert basin that becomes at times a shallow lake” which is appropriate to the geologic history of New River as it was once the bottom of a lake and stream beds. Several intermittent flowing washes also grace the land.

Structure your own retreat with these guidelines:

  • Retreats can be from one-day to a week long from September 15 to June 1 (omitting the summer season).
  • Dates are set up by contacting penelope@animaltalk.net and pre-registering (see pre-requisites below).
  • You set your own daily schedule. The hours you may visit during your retreat are sunrise to sunset.
  • Silence cultivates fruitful solitude and spiritual realizations. Cell phone off during your time on the land.
  • At the beginning of your retreat, I will give an orientation to the land and a written list of suggested ways to facilitate contemplation (calm observation and reflection) with yourself and all the plants, animals, and physical and spiritual elements of the area. The rest of the time is your own adventure in contemplative solitude. We can have a discussion at the end of your day to review your experiences and answer any questions if you desire.
  • The retreats will be non-residential, except if you wish to camp on the land. Accommodations within 15-25 miles of New River can be found through websites such as booking.com and hotels.com (Cave Creek, Carefree, Anthem, Scottsdale, Phoenix).
  • Healthy snacks (fruit, nuts, seeds, nut butter, rice cakes…) filtered water, a variety of teas, and a vegetarian soup and crackers for lunch will be provided. You provide the rest of your meals off-site.

SHAMANIC RETREATS

Desert Dream Ancient Grandmother Shamanic Healing Retreats

March 17-19 (just before Spring Equinox) and
November 3-5, (full moon) 2017

It’s easy to get caught up in the conflicts and confusions of human life on Earth. This can obscure the sense of our true essence and a more expansive view of what life is really about.

Periodic awakenings, reminders, retreats, or spiritually recharging experiences help us to know and fully embrace our spiritual nature beyond physical appearances. These spiritual invigorations can help heal any sense of disconnection from a fruitful, fulfilling existence. When we are empowered to nurture and heal ourselves, each other, and the Earth, we feel peaceful harmony within our hearts and minds that echoes in life all around us.

Mother Earth’s wise ancestral guardians, the Ancient Grandmothers and Grandfathers, conduct us deeper into our true source of inner divine power. This removes obstacles to living in peace and loving kindness amidst the apparent chaos of human existence.

This retreat will help anchor communion with yourself and all beings/all life. Learn the healing ways of the Elder Spirits and how to be a continual source of healing energy for yourself, others, and the Earth

Penelope was initiated into the circle of the Ancient Grandmother Spirits in 1996. Since then, while also teaching courses in interspecies communication, she has worked with these powerful, kind, loving, and delightful elder spirits in many drum healing circles and retreats.

Retreat hours: Friday 6-9 PM, Saturday 9 AM-5PM and Sunday: 9 AM-Noon

Schedule:

FRIDAY:  We gather at Desert Dream at 6 PM on Friday. The Evening Drum Circle will start at 6:30 PM The circle begins as we call our guiding spirits and animal powers from all the directions, drumming, rattling and chanting together to set the tone, heightening our energy for the arrival of the Elder Spirits. We bask in their palpable presence, hear their songs, music, and stories within and around us, and feel the transformational energy of their healing power. Group singing, drumming and sharing of experiences close the circle by 9 PM.

SATURDAY & SUNDAY: Shamanic journeying to find and commune with your own Ancient Grandmother or Grandfather spirit helper for your own healing. The rest of the time may include: finding your own uplifting protection or power chant/song, a journey for another’s healing, working in the circle as a shaman/shamama to help other individuals and for healing on/in/with Mother Earth.

Prerequisites: Experience with intuitive and/or interspecies communication skills and shamanic journeying. Dedication to spiritual growth. These shamanic retreats are intended to involve high vibration, intense energy, shamanic healing phenomena, and profound spiritual transformation. The retreat is not designed for people new to spiritual experiences and shamanic journeying. Before registering, e-mail penelope@animaltalk.net to let me know about your readiness and if you have done any courses or retreats with me before.

Recommended Preparation: The Way of the Shaman book by Michael Harner, The Foundation for Shamanic Studies Basic Shamanism Course, www.shamanism.org shamanic journey practice, training in interspecies communication, Penelope’s written and audio/video publications. Animal Spirit Call CD (Spirit Power Circle drumming and singing and Ancient Grandmother healing chants) http://animaltalk.net/booksaudiovideo.htm
